Rustic interior design in the old yellow barn

Behind the yellow metal sheets of the old hay barn, there used to be a bare-bones golf simulator hall that was a bit raw, half-empty, and lacking charm. You could hear the sound of golf balls hitting the screen and grab a draft beer, but the room itself felt sterile and uninspiring.
However, Jeppe and Pernille from Volstrup Golfcenter saw something else: unrealized potential.

From raw barstools to full-on rustic interior design

Before the transformation, the interior design was a mismatch of various furniture pieces. Functionally, it worked – but visually, it was a bit of a mess. Jeppe had previously bought some rustic barstools from Trademark Living for his homemade bar tables, so it was only natural to reach out to them again.

“I arranged for their interior design consultant Klaus to visit and take a look at the bigger project. It was a real eye-opener to have him there and with his ideas, the hall got a whole new vibe: dark grey walls, large, framed iron grids above the dining areas, and an interior design that became both cosy and practical,” Jeppe explains.

“The hall felt sterile. Let’s be honest, it was very ‘hall-like’. We wanted it to become a place where people actually want to hang out and host social events. And it turns out that the potential was absolutely there,” Jeppe laughs.

A consistent thread in the rustic interior design

“After the visit, Klaus came back with some suggestions for a rustic interior design, and we were instantly sold. We love the flexible rolling partition walls and the New Yorker-style glass partitions, which now create intimate zones throughout the hall. Now there’s a red thread in the design that continues all the way to the restrooms – and for us, that’s just brilliant,” says Jeppe.

Guests are blown away

“Our guests are blown away. The old barn exterior doesn’t even hint at the interior atmosphere. People love the style, the cosiness, and they want to stay,” Jeppe says.
“When the door opens and you step inside, it’s hard to believe you’re standing in what used to be a hay barn.”

A process worth its weight in gold

“Klaus has been amazing throughout the whole process. He even came back to help us kick off the interior setup. It was worth its weight in gold that he didn’t just deliver ideas, but was actually there in the hall, moving around lamps and plants until everything fit. Honestly, that might’ve been the best part of the whole experience,” Jeppe says with a smile.

Want to create a bit of that same rustic interior design as at Volstrup Golfcenter?

Here are Klaus’ best tips:

  1. Paint the walls dark: It helps tone down the sterile look and creates that cosy, cave-like atmosphere.
  2. High ceilings? Hang iron grids above the dining areas to make the space feel lower. They also allow you to add lamps and let green plants hang down to bring warmth and life into the room.
  3. Create flexibility: Rolling New Yorker-style walls can easily divide large rooms into smaller zones. Add hooks and plants, and they also double as coat racks or green walls.
  4. Mix materials: Wood, iron, and leather are a great match; together they create a rustic interior design with edge.

PENDANT LIGHTING

Atmospheric lighting is a key element in rustic interior design. It sets the mood and pulls everything together.
